Ohio Dwarf Car Association
I was at Shadybowl for a special test and tune for the Dwarf Cars.. The Track and the association decide that the dwarf’s would be required to run a wicker board to improve safety and lower speeds.
What is a wicker board you ask? The wicker boards are used in most cases to slow cars down. They are usually the width on the top of the cars and several inches tall. The taller the Board the more air it catches and that causes drag. The more drag on the car the slower it will go. The First time I saw a wicker board was a few years ago on a Kimmel Street Stock Series car which was run on large tracks. Kimmel did it to slow the street stocks down and it worked to some degree.
It was thought that the wicker board would slow dwarf cars down around 4 tens. I am not sure how much it actually slowed them down. At the test most found out that it made the more stable to drive. This made driving the cars easier to handle, which might negate the effect of slowing the cars down much. This will create a safer driving experience of all dwarfs cars drivers on the track. Nothing worsts them trying to pass another car when they are hard to control.
There were six cars there and between them they tried a 3 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch and a six inch wicker board. There was some disagreement on if the wicked board was going to slow some down or make them handle better. Some really likes what it did to their car and others did not. The talk was that some teams would spend money and time to overcome the wicker boards.
There was talk of other ideas on slowing the cars down but most would cost more money, then the cost of the wicker boards.
At the end of the day, the decision was to use a 6 inch wicker board. So we are all looking forward to the first race of the wicker boards on the Dwarf cars on Sat April 25. It should make for an interesting race.
