Most people that know me, know I love local racing. It's not all about the cars going around the track or the bumping and banging. For me it's all about the people and the passion they show. Many people have their favorite teams and drivers and other have teams or driver they dislike tremendously. All of these passions bring out the best and worst in people.
I had a great experience this weekend at Shadybowl Speedway. It was during the Stealth Trailers CRA Series Door Buster 200. Late in the race I was standing in turn 3 near a group of other people and there was a battle between Jason Atkinson trying to pass Colby Lane for the lead. This went on for about 10 to 15 laps. A lady kept bumping into me and kept asking how many laps were left. She would move forward looking at the track so I asked her if she was the mom of the Colby Lane and she said “yes”. She was so nervous.
I found out later that this was the first win for Colby in the CRA Street Stock Series. His dad Jeff Lane had won numerous races and championships in several different series.
I had the privileged of going down on the track for the award ceremony. Mrs. Lane ran up to her son and hugged him and told him how proud she was of him. There were lots of people there congradulating Colby and his family.
After the awards ceremony and photos at the track, they are required to go through tech. I met Linda Lane and she hugged me and told me how happy she was. Jeff Lane told me that it was the article that I did on him and his son that made the win possible. I am sure that I had nothing to do with it. Jeff said “ I guess I passed the torch to my son tonight”.
I went back to their trailer with them and took photos of the family and the crew members of the Lane Team. We wished each other good luck and went our separate ways. Here I met a family who are new friends. What more can you ask for from a Saturday night race.
