Rick started his racing career in 1980 racing three wheelers at Kenworthy motocross and a Greenville track. During this time Rick won many trophies. In 1983 Rick moved to drag racing. He raced a Chevy Monza. with a 355 cu. in. ran 11.90s and finished in the top 8 in Championship points and was able to race at the US Nationals in Indiana. While at Indy he finished in the top 20 out of about 300 cars.
Rick started working at Shadybowl Speedway by doing cement work with his dad. They built the back wall for the track, the floors for the barns, restrooms, grandstand seating and walk ways.
Rick has raced in the school bus races and trailer races when Charlie Stapleton owned the race track. His first stock car race was in the compact class. In his race he decided to ride on the tail. After having three restarts to start the race, Rick was tired of running on the tail and on the green went to the outside and hit the turn four wall but still finished the race in third. He had a good year with many 2nd and 3rd but did not win a race.
Rick decided to buy a street stock and spent time rebuilding it, and his hard work paid off finishing around the top 5 most of the time. Bud Swob liked the way Rick drove and the way Rick kept his car in one piece. Bud asked Rick if he would like to drive his car, the number 2 late model. Rick and Bud took the car for test and tune and agreed to be partners on the race car. They are on a small budget , without sponsorship they will only be able to run a partial schedule.
